The Dream Journal – August 2018

We just got home from our midwest tour this afternoon. We had hot weather and cold weather, beautiful clear days, a bit of rain, and a couple of wild storms. On our path back home via Canada, we even encountered a lot of smoke from wildfires in Ontario. We’re back with just enough time to pick all the baseball bat sized zucchini in the garden, do some laundry, change the oil in the van’s generator, load up the sound gear and head out for a week of gigs in Massachusetts.

We start out the trip with the Serendipity Songwriters Session at Serendipity Cafe in Maynard, MA on Wednesday, August 8th. This month, we are joined by guest songwriters Eric Kilburn and Martin Swinger. The theme, chosen by July’s audience, is “It’s been longer since I’ve seen you, than I knew you.” Join us for a great meal, tasty dessert, an evening of amazing original music, and the opportunity to help us choose the theme for next month’s songwriters. Music runs 7:30-9:30pm.

On Thursday, August 9th, we’ll drop in at WICN-FM studios in Worcester, MA to chat with DJ Nick Noble live in studio on his weekly radio show, The Folk Revival. The show runs 7-11pm; not sure yet what time we’ll be on. If you’re in the Worcester area, you can listen live at 90.5FM, or you can stream live over the internet by going to and click on “Listen Live Online”. Since we’ve moved to New Hampshire, we haven’t had as many opportunities to stop in to chat with Nick, and we’re looking forward to seeing him.

To continue a very busy musical week, we head over to the Unitarian Church of Marlboro & Hudson in Hudson, MA on Friday, August 10th as the August featured performer at SESSIONS. SESSIONS is an Open Mike, Songwriters Round Table, Invitational JAM and Occasional CoffeeHaus. Come listen to us, and join in on the open mike! Music starts at 7pm. This is a new open mike for us.

Another new open mike for us is the Appleseeds Coffeehouse at the Unitarian Universalist Area Church in Sherborn, MA. We’ll feature there on Saturday, August 11th. Music starts at 7pm. This one has been going for several years, but we only heard about it recently. Should be fun!

We close out our week’s tour of Massachusetts with a trip to the Acton/Boxboro Farmers Market in West Acton, MA on Sunday, August 12th. Lots of great produce, crafts, baked goods, and we provide the soundtrack. The market runs 10am-1pm. Stop by the market to pick up dinner makings, stay for the music! There are even chairs set up in front of the music tent for you to sit and relax a while.

Looking a bit further ahead, on Saturday, September 1st, the Keene Music Festival takes place in Keene, NH. This year, a new songwriters stage has been added to the festival on Emerald Street, outside the Toadstool Bookshop / Farm Cafe. The stage runs from 11am-6pm; we play 2:45-3:30pm. The other songwriters playing at this stage include Bill Wolston, Mike Bradley, Sonic Soundscape, Ross Arnold, Neptune’s Car, Picket Hill, Julie Snow and Volkert Volkersz. This will be a great day of music!

We’re always incredibly grateful for all the great local venues that offer live music. The best way to support live local music is to support the venues that bring it to you.

The Dream Journal – July 2018

We’re just coming to the end of the first week of really hazy, hot and humid weather of the summer. Hard to believe that we actually had the heat on in the house the week before, and now we’re melting! But we’ve got tomatoes, peppers and zucchini that might actually ripen in the next week or so, and we’ve just picked a quart of fresh black raspberries from our back yard. Nothing finer than fresh berries from your own berry bushes! Some may become sorbet, but we’ll eat the first round as plain berries. Mmmm! Definite comfort food.

There are certain performance spaces that have a warm, welcoming vibe to them. The Hearing Room in Lowell, MA is one of those spaces. We’re happy to be headed there this Friday, July 6th for Mushroom Musicians Presents: Songwriters In The Round, and even happier to be sharing the evening with Ruth Hill. We met Ruth last winter, and fell in love with her brilliant songwriting. We’ll be swapping songs with her starting at 8pm.

A couple of years before we moved from Bolton, MA, the Bolton Conservation Trust tore down an old gas station and turned the site into a beautiful town common. Now that the Bolton Town Common has been established, the Parks and Recreation Commission is starting up a new summer concert series. We are honored to be kicking off the series this coming Sunday, July 8th, from 5-7pm. Bring a picnic dinner, a blanket or lawn chairs, and enjoy a summer evening of music!

The next Serendipity Songwriter Session at the Serendipity Cafe in Maynard, MA is Wednesday, July 11th. The guest songwriters this month are Rachel Marie and Morgan Johnston, and Beth DeSombre is guest hosting. The theme for this month’s session, chosen by June’s audience, is “Torn in twain”. Have dinner and dessert, enjoy some wonderful original music, and help choose the theme for August’s songwriters! Music runs 7:30-9:30pm.

Apologies to folks who were looking for our online Concert Window concert last month. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we had to cancel. But we’re back this month on Tuesday, July 17th. Bring up from anywhere with internet access and invite us into your living room. Curl up with a frosty beverage and a snack, make yourself comfortable, and listen in! We play 8-9pm Eastern time.

After a month and a half of gigs around home in New England, we’re again headed west. We start the western tour at Nickel City Frets in Akron, NY on Thursday, July 19th for the Nickel City Sessions. We’ll be playing in the round starting at 7pm with Andrew Dunn, Kate Callahan, and guest host Tom Callahan (no relation to Kate). Thanks to Davey O. for inviting us to take part in this series!

A few years back, we did an in-the-round show called “Dueling Duos” with our good friends Andina & Rich (Sandy Andina and Stephen Lee Rich) in Steve’s home town of Madison, WI. We had so much fun with it, we decided to do it again, only this time we’re headed to Sandy’s home town of Chicago, IL. Join us Sunday, July 22nd at Uncommon Ground’s Lakeview location from 7-9pm. Combine two duos for an in-the-round, attempting to follow one another thematically, and you get a spontaneous, fun collaboration.

Our travel van is made by Winnebago. Once a year, a group of 2000 Winnebago RVs (and their owners) get together in a field in Forest City, IA for the Winnebago Grand National Rally (GNR). This year, we are honored to play in the special events tent at the rally. If you’re a Winnebago owner, and will be at GNR, stop by the special events tent on Thursday, July 26th from 2-3:30pm, and let us entertain you.  And swing by the Winnie-B’s row and say hello!

There’s lots of good local music out there if you look for it. It’s worth looking for!
