Happy New Year!
Over the last several years, we’ve had very mild winters here. This year, Mother Nature has decided that it’s time to bring back the old fashioned New England winter, complete with multiple days in a row of below-freezing temperatures. We haven’t had any major snow storms yet, but we’ve had a bunch of little ones, and we’ve had snow on the ground since before Christmas. The first ice storm of the season was last week. Walking on ice is a very different thing from walking on dry ground! We call it “walking with penguin feet”, as you keep your center of balance directly over your feet at all times to keep them from taking off in different directions from where you’re headed. The world outside our windows is a study in black, white, and brown, with occasional splashes of color from blue jays, bluebirds, and cardinals. With the full moon shining down on the snow, the nights feel almost as bright as daylight, and we’ve been watching our local fox pair chase each other around the yard, casting moon shadows as they frolic. We’re hoping this means we’ll have little fox kits running around this spring!
As beautiful as the winter is, it’s nice to get away to someplace warm for a while. The Folk Alliance International (FAI) annual conference will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana this year from Wednesday, January 21st through Sunday, January 25th. This will be our second year at the “big” conference, and we’re looking forward to spending a bit of time in New Orleans as well! We have a number of late night showcases scheduled, and will be hosting an hour of the AFM Local 1000 Showcase Free Zone Friday night. If you’ll be attending the FAI conference, let us know. We would love to meet up!
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is coming up on Monday, January 19th. Dan’s song Footsteps, written in the aftermath of the Parkland school shooting, reminds us of MLK’s legacy and how standing together and speaking truth to power can change the world.
